CHAPTER 18

Other than the occasional text message, GIF, or brief call, I didn’t hear much from Kevin. It sounded like he was swamped and exhausted. In his texts, he hinted it was like hazing for a fraternity or when he was drafted to the NBA and had to constantly prove himself. When my phone buzzed as I walked in the door and caller ID indicated it was him, I smiled.

“How’s it going?”

“I’ll survive. Definite flashbacks to when I started in the NBA. A little more intense and personal than the academy – now these are the men and women who will have my back and they need to know I’ll have theirs as well.”

“Any of them fans?”

“Not that they’re admitting. More not comfortable with a pro-athlete, expecting attitude all the time. When it’s come up, I’ve told them ‘That part of my life is over. You want to shoot a few baskets, happy to play – but only for the exercise, for fun.’ Unfortunately, I’m not sure anyone trusts me yet. It’s only been a few days.”

“I guess I could see that. Anyone else new?”

He chuckled. “Yeah, one other. Straight out of the marines. He gets the same sort of grief and he’s younger than me, 25 at most.”

“Other than that, how’s it going?”

“Job is good. Always something going on. Most times not the most pleasant. The home invaders moved to Reston. We’ve been busy. Any news on Trudy’s murder?”

I shivered. “I wish they’d catch the person responsible already. I’m glad they eliminated Bill, Wade, and Jillian. They seem to realize it wasn’t Trina either. She won’t feel better about this until the real killer is caught though.”

“She’s only not exonerated because so far they don’t have anyone else to consider.”

“I know. I know. Trina, Jillian and I are shopping for the wedding on Saturday afternoon. I haven’t even thought about a wedding gift and I don’t know what to wear. And it’s only a week away.”

“Chill, Stacie. We’ll come up with something. I gotta run but wanted to hear your voice.” He chuckled. “Try to stay out of trouble.”

“Back at you. Later.”

Looking forward to a quiet evening, I grabbed a salad to go from Sue’s Sandwich Shoppe. Wally handed me the order with a “Great to see you embracing a more healthy food choice.”

I laughed, knowing full well that dessert would be a “healthy” serving of rocky road ice cream. Although the weather may have turned too cold for a run, it’s never too cold for ice cream.

At home, Jasper and I managed a very quick walk. I checked out the movies and opted to read a cozy mystery instead. Maybe it would help tickle something about Trudy’s murder I didn’t realize yet. That didn’t work and I was grateful to be able to get to bed early.

It would have been nice if Trudy’s killer revealed himself while I slept. I was leaning toward it being the man from the Creekview Lounge, Oakwood, or her ex. Any such revelation was cut short when the phone rang at 1:25 a.
